I love it Peter... vanity and fear are pretty much the same thing I guess! The ultimate fear I suppose is dying... or is the fear not living! In some people's eyes, a beer gut is a sign of living, until you collapse in a breathless heap at work ; ) Anyway, I've seen you recently and there was no beer gut (well not yet anyway ; ) Right back to work!

Fear. Fear is what gets me out the door in a pair of shorts on cold winters night. Fear of becoming the balding midle-aged man with a beer gut that I really am but am trying to kid myself that I'm not. Fear of being beaten at parkrun by other middle-aged men with bigger beer guts than me. Fear of being beaten by 7 year old children. Fear of not being able to walk up the stairs at work without having a seizure.
Or maybe that's not fear - it's just vanity?
Or perhaps it's just an excuse to escape from the washing-up?
What do you think?

Hi Ian... well done on your training. I know what you mean about all those things, the runner's high, the friends and the fitness! We might be mad but we get more from our madness than other mad people ; )....It's great to have a race to aim for. I think that always keeps me focussed, that distant dream that one day I might run under three hours for a marathon...

Sometimes its difficult to quantify what it is that makes me get out of the door. Sometimes I put it off, finding things to do to delay that blast of cold air as I open the front door. I'm averaging 40 miles per week at the moment and this will step up to 50 within the next month. I have a 10km in Llandudno this Sunday and that will feel like a sprint after doing so many 10 milers. Then I have the Silverstone half marathon on 11th March so that is the real focal point of my winter training as I want to really lower my PB having run the same race last year. Then its a matter of keeping the mileage up and working on speed before some marathon action in the Autumn.
Why I do it I can't say, some of my friends think I am mad but I love the freedom, the runners high, the company of fellow runners, and the fitness the exercise brings....its uplifting....

Hi Enda - swimming is Jo's choice of cross training. You opt for what works for you. Walking or walk-running is best, alternatively you could try a class at the gym, or use the cross trainer. Sorry for the late reply!
